UMD a waste of time and money, says Perry
PSP Slim and Lite remodel a "head in the sand" move

The UMD is a dead format that's a waste of money, time, and investment according to David Perry.
Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, the Shiny founder and operator of GameConsultants.com revealed what he would do if he were in charge of PlayStation Portable development.

"They really need to restart the PSP programme in my book. They really need to bring out the PSP 3.0 and start again and try to get a lot of units out by reducing the manufacturing costs, by taking out all the motors and drives and stuff they have in there."

"That will make it even more sexy-looking, because it will be thinner again when they get all that junk out. Then, hopefully, the platform will actually get enough interest so that people will make a game specifically for it," Perry said.He referred to the recent PSP Slim and Lite remodel as a "head in the sand" move.

As for what current PSP owners will do with their UMDs if Sony turns to a download-only handheld, Perry said that it would be fairly trivial to include software to validate that a user owns a certain game, much like iTunes. With authentication, users should be allowed to download digital versions of UMD games they already own.

When questioned as to why Sony hadn't already done this, Perry responded: "The truth is, the stores will not carry PSPs unless they feel they are going to get a piece of the action on the back end. And Sony has not come up with an innovative business model that can support that concept."
But with the industry moving in the direction of digital downloads, Sony needs to come up with a shared revenue system eventually.

"Maybe its an even slightly better deal because there is no cost of goods, and shipping, insurance, and warehousing is all out the window...so maybe the store gets a little bit more. And they get more of their shelf space back, which is their most valuable asset."

The complete interview with Dave Perry will be published tomorrow on GamesIndustry.biz.

I agree, dead format. Join the pile of minidisc and Betamax.

And thats another time Dave Perry has made an idiotic comment. The Slim PSP IS NOT PSP 2.0, its merely a slimline version of the original PSP. Also, UMD's are NOT a dead format, they are a good way of having massive amounts of data on a mobile format. Downloadable only format? sorry Dave, not everyone in the world has access to online you know (especially in Japan where handheld consoles sell the most). He sounds like the PSP isnt selling, which is completely rediculous, its selling very well for Sony's first attempt at a handheld. I'll tell you right now, a downloadable only format for a handheld WILL NOT WORK, it will flop as badly as the Gizmondo.

Why not say the same about the DS Dave? biased much?

What timing chimpy.... the minute we accuse NEWshound of being you, you jump in just in time to save him.

But I won't disagree with this one. I look for anything worth watching on my small screen but can't find anything at any store. Dead format, but he didn't have to go as far as to explain why Sony won't do this or that. It's the same as complaining about why the Xbox 360 will never have hardware that will not fail. "Their business model won't support it... They don't want to do it and make people spend their money one warranties?"

hmmm... I just don't like the way he puts it into words...

UMD is dead......if you want it, Bahahaha...John Lennon quote....i personally think that UMD isnt dead...people that THINK its dead are just not using it right....see people, UMD's cost money

I don't see how it could be dead if it is the primary format for a system that (arguably) isn't dead. It's not like someone's going to not buy a psp because it uses umds.

There was an interview on Kotaku with SCEA President Jack Tretton where he was asked about the UMD being a dead format. He said that Sony has already talked to the movie companies releasing the UMD movies but it was their decision of the price and making it a hard to buy movie because of the price. He said that if he was in charge he would lower the price of the movies on UMD and making it more affordable to people as its not a full DVD with its functions.

As i personaly would have bought UMD movies but because of the expensive price on them decided not to. but i would of course buy some UMD movies if they lower the price on them as i travel a lot and its nice to have a movie to watch on the bus.
