Scientific Background
PC and MAC Folding Clients
The goal is to understand protein folding, misfolding, and related diseases.
What is protein folding and how is folding linked to disease?
Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out these important functions, they assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, in many ways remains a mystery.
Moreover, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold" ), there can be serious consequences, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers and cancer-related syndromes.
You can help by simply running a piece of software.
Folding@Home is a distributed computing project -- people from through out the world download and run software to band together to make one of the largest supercomputers in the world. Every computer makes the project closer to our goals.
Folding@Home uses novel computational methods coupled to distributed computing, to simulate problems thousands to millions of times more challenging than previously achieved.

This is a reminder for you PS3 users to join the Gamer411 folding team.
If we get ranked in the top 2000 teams, we can get signature images that show stats.

It's using all of the PS3's to act like a giant computer, processing protine data faster than would be possible for any 1 computer.

Yeah... It's stanford university who is doing it... You can run it on a PC and now the PS3... It basically makes all the PS3's and PCs that are folding act like one giant computer processing the data.
Here's a simple analogy.
To process protine X, it takes a folding computer 10 minutes.
With distributed processing, we can spread the processing across many computers.
10 computers working together to process protine X would take only 1 minute.
So standford can get large armounts of data processed amazingly faster than doing it only on stanford computers.

I checked our stats and we are 2052 of 77012....
If we get into the top 2000, we get siganture cards from overclocking that shows our stats.
Come on people... Start folding with me!!!!
Here's some examples....

link <-- Deltan's Stats (One of main mods)
link <-- Stats images.
At PSU, they are creating signatures that embed the stats into it. Cool stuff. We get this.. We just have to overtake a few more teams. We just need a few more people!

We are so close to breaking the 2000 barrier. Way to fold team!!
There's a new folding client out now... Exit your current folding and re-enter to get it. I havent checked it out yet, but it is supposed to have new visuals, a new mode called screensaver and an advaned mode.
There are some reports of it not being available to everyone yet, but it is announced on the folding home page.

PS3: YoYo-Pete
Sony Computer Entertainment (SCEI) has released a list of changes and new features that will be implemented in version 1.2 of Folding@home for the PlayStation 3 home video game console.
One of the big new features is Remote Play support for the PlayStation Portable handheld gaming system. With this feature, users can control Folding@home using their PSPs. For this feature to work, the PSP being used must be running firmware 3.50 or higher.
Improvement: Visibility of Donor Locations on the Globe
The markers indicating PS3 system donor locations on the globe have been improved to differentiate between daytime and nighttime areas.
Improvement: Support for Additional Protein Simulations
Additional computation cores are now supported. This allows Folding@homefor PS3 to support a wider range of protein-folding simulations.
Improvement: Advanced Participation Mode
An advanced participation mode has been added to Folding@home for PS3. This mode allows Stanford to send simulations of varying computational lengths to users of Folding@home for PS3. Because the simulations in this mode can take significantly longer, Advanced Mode is only recommended for contributors who run Folding@home for PS3 for at least eight (8) hours per day.
Note: In Advanced Mode, an energy graph during the simulation will also be displayed. In this graph, the blue line represents the total energy level of the protein over time. The red line represents the average temperature level at which the current simulation is run.
Improvement: Screensaver Mode
A screensaver mode can now be activated via the Settings menu. After no controller input has been detected for three (3) minutes, the screen will go blank except for a logo that periodically moves to avoid screen burn-in. Any controller input will exit the screensaver mode. This feature allows your PS3 system to consume slightly less power and to increase performance of protein-folding simulations.
Improvement: Link to Project Description
A link has been added to the Information menu that allows you to quickly obtain additional information about the specific research project that you're currently contributing to.
Improvement: Protein Visualization Enhancements
All visualization modes have been enhanced with improved shading, highlighting, and focus effects. In addition, four new visualization modes have been added:
Tapioca – Displays the protein as a smooth surface with improved shading and depth. (Tapioca replaces the "ISO Surface" visualization that was available in earlier versions.)
Caviar – Displays the protein as a smooth surface with defined edges.
Licorice – Displays only the protein's bonds.
Backbone – Emphasizes specific sections of the protein that are of the most scientific interest to researchers.
Note: The Backbone visualization is not available for all proteins.
In order to update Folding@home to version 1.2, all you have to do is restart the application and then follow the onscreen update prompts. After that's done, you're ready to go back to folding them proteins. It might take it a day or two to recognize an update is out.

We did it... We are in the top 2000... w00t! Thanks guys.
You see above we have our team stats and links to details at Extreme Overclocking.com.... Next step is to get into the top 800 and we get our own individual stats.
Download the PC clients and start folding on your screen savers. We're doing great. Also, check the details in the program. You can now see the details on what you are actually folding.
We are really making a difference doing this.
