File Transfer from PC to PS3 via your Network

A web server on your PC can help you out.
We know you cant see your PS3 from your PC . Wouldn't it be nice to drag files from your PC to your PSP? Well since you can't, I've come up with a work around for it. A web server.
In my examply, I am using IIS. But you can use any web server you want. Some will argue about the security of IIS, but I use it in the corporate world and have 0 issues. Now I'm not going to go into detail about step by step as this is just conceptually how you do it. The web is full of stuff to explain the details. These are standard concepts for web servers.
So first thing you do is get the web server up and running. Okay... Done. Now you can set up security if you want. Your router keeps everything out, so it's not necessary, but you can if you want.
Once the web server is happy we can use it to serve files to the PS3. To do it, you create a virtual directory. What that is, is basically a short cut in concept. The web server wants everyhting to be in it's web server directory, but if you want to use a folder outside of it, you create a virtual directory and point it at any folder you want.
In "My Documents" , I have "My pictures" and "My Videos" that I would like to access from the PS3. So I create 2 virtual directories. The first I call "Pics" and point it at "My Pictures". The second I call "Vids" and point it at "My Videos". In the properties for the virtual directories, turn on Directory Browsing. If you dont, you will just get a "page cannot be displayed" or "You dont have permissions" error. Once the Directory Browsing is turned on, you are done.
In the PS3, start a browser and go to your PC's internal address (not your public address). Add the name of the virtual directory after the address. I.E.: 192.168.1.1/Vids <-- Goes to My Documents / My Videos.
You should get a generic looking listing of the files in that folder that show up as links. You can go into folders that are in the Virtual Directory folder, but you cant go back to the My Documents. Just My Videos and any folders in it.
The links are files and you can click them and save the files to your PS3's hard drive to view them there. It should be fast as it's your local network and not the internet. Same speeds as you would get via UPnP (more or less).
So that's it. You just downloaded files from your PC to your PS3 across the network. Unfortunatly you cant go from PS3 to PC, but typically you are wanting to put stuff on your PS3 and not vice versa.
Have fun!

damn YoYo,
that's a sweet write up you might say.
do you have an extra PS3 so i can actual use all the hard work you just put up there?
just curious if this would also work with the PSP and if there is already a write up for that?

This isn't something new for me... there is so many ways to do a file server.
You didn't exactly help anyone without some fricken suggestion either yoyo...
Ok well here is 2 file servers.
This one is a basic HFS server... which basically is a file server.

I recommend this one because it's specifically made for the ps3 and set up is so damn easy too!

There are plenty of things out on the net if you google them on how to configure web servers... I'm not re-writing the wheel here, just suggesting on how the concepts work.

Hi pete, long time! Great tut. Ofcourse you can use this on every device with a webbrowser and download capabilities.
About security issues in IIS, is it advisable to make system folders like "My Documents" virtual web directories? I have been told not to, but that's a long time ago... Also in cases of a shared computer, it will not work unless you are admininistrator... am I wrong?

TJ... You are right.... The info I got must have been wrong... So why cant we see the PS3?
And DCLXVI... (Hi buddy) Your network isnt exposed to the pubic, so it shouldnt be an issue. If it is, then if you choose to make such folders web directories you need to take precations. Obviously.
I mean it's no different than using any other folder. Obviously, you might not want to put your financials folder up there, just in case... But web technology is secure today... With all the B2B stuff happening out there... It's secure as anything.
But all that requires it to be done correctly... It's best to only expose what you ned to.
So if the PS3 does have UPnP.... How do we take advantage of it?
