How many of you think that Nintendo and Sony are intentionally releasing a short supply of the PS3/Wii in order to build hype? Remember how ravenous people got with the release of the 360? Even the news was giving out free press by the bucketload about how horrendous of a crime it was that not every boy and girl could get a 360.

On the one hand, you'd think that selling the most units would be the best thing. But the amount of hype built around a shortage could be of greater advantage?

What say you?

Truthfully.. I think Sony promised something they couldnt deliver. They weren't ready for next gen yet and the 360 forced them to play catchup. Now they have a shortage that I think is very real. If you do some reading you'll find that business analysts that do this for a living have been predicting this shortage since last year.
As far as the Wii is concerned, I don't think a shortage serves Nintendo's interest, so I doubt it's fake. They would sell more consoles by default at Cmas if they were available, given the shortage of the PS3 and the cost of BOTH the competing consoles. I think people who might have scoffed at the cost of the Wii three years ago, would see it as a bargain and jump on it with both feet now.

Yeah, I was leaning towards it being not useful for either party. But I still wonder if there's an element of neither of them being that fussed because ultimately it'll increase press because of the shopping madness that will be Thanksgiving / Xmas in America thanks to the shortages.

nintendo has 1,000,000 coming to the Us so that's not small

Dude everything freakin CHNAGED!

Yeah for the best

I wouldn't say that Nintendo have a shortage, I'm sure I read that they had produced an excess of units, so I don't see a huge problem there. Sony on the other hand, I think has a larger issue. When the 360 launched, it had no real competition, and so no temptation not to buy one. However, when there aren't enough PS3s in the christmas rush, I can see a lot of people deciding to purchase a 360 or Wii. Due to shortages in the diodes, over here (Europe) the PS3 is entirely missing the Christmas season and launching in March, whereas the Wii is released in early December. I can't see it being a good situation for Sony.

what happened to ps2 is gonna happen to ps3, and what i mean by that is that it will not nessicarily be best selling in its first year, but will have sold most in the long term

just have to wait and see, i really want sony and nintendo to do well. and microsoft need some competitors otherwise games are going to get worse! i cant help but think that once all the fuss has died down around the wii that its fancy control is going to wear off as just a gimmick that might actually restrict it.

Well said here. Another thing to add, the Sony PS3 was a moneymaker for Sony. If only they knew that Apple was introducing the iPod, they would not have fallen back on profit. Sony tried hard to make a comeback with their "iPods" but came out unsuccessful. The PS3 was to make that loss money.
