360: I digigram I
Ok, been a while... how is everyone? I want to talk about Xbox live, and people that think Microsoft hosts ALL games.
More often than not, I get into an argument with people that think that because one pays for Xbox Live, that every game they play - Microsoft hosts the game for them.
Now I know that arguing with these people in a civilized manner is pointless.... However, I still dont understand why people continually believe this.
Microsoft does not host a single game for you guys, dont you realize that?

Im not too hot on the subject, so what youre saying is 3rd party developers host the servers, correct?
For example, Rockstar hosts GTA4 servers?

Yes. TJ10 gets a cookie.
ALL..... Xbox live games, are Peer to Peer. Meaning MS does not host dedicated servers for any game, and their standard for developers to make games for their system do not require them to incorporate it into a game.
My point with why I have a problem with the ignorance on the subject, is that people automatically think, that since they are paying for xbox live, not only do they get what they pay for, but they also think MS has something to do with hosting the multiplayer online games they play.
the gaming side, minus the population, is the same thing when playing PS3 and xbox 360, it's peer to peer. At least most of the better online games on ps3 have dedicated servers hosted by the developers themselves (see socom).
Now, I am fine with paying for xbox live, they provide a pretty decent service.. But in no way should someone think that there is a difference in Xbox 360 P2P hosting vs PS3 p2p hosting. it's peer to peer. I personally think peer to peer is crap, and developers should be laying down the minor cost in supporting their own dedicated servers. so at least when someone wants to play a game, they can play a game where no ONE person has control of taking advantage of the structure of peer to peer hosting. (lag switching, ping advantage, glitching, hard drive manipulation and running malicious gaming enhancement crap)..
Speaking of which..
an xbox 360 hosting a game, because it logs stats and crap like that, will get an averaged out MINIMUM of 50-60ms ping time...
A dedicated server, depending on distance from and connection type of said dedicated server, can be a minimum of around 6ms.
and yes. with gaming, as I have learned for so many years, a difference of 40-50 milliseconds when playing a precision required game like a shooter... totally matters.
