Thread starter

I was just about to buy Warhawk, but I keep seeing these threads pop on the playstation forums about how peoples PS3's either freeze or they get a "Game Full" message when trying to join a game.

Check it out if you don't believe me. link

I know that the PSN is free, but is it really worth it if people keep having these kind of problems? I've heard similar problems with Resistance (I wouldn't really know since I've only played it online once). With Xbox Live I never have these kind of problems. Any time I want to join a game I can.

I'm not trying to bash Sony or the PSN, but answer me this, would you rather pay for a service and know it's going to work, or get a service for free and deal with these kind of issues all the time?

Personally I would much rather pay for a service that works. Let me know what you guys/gals think.

nice one, bash 'Sony's' free service when the crashing is a bug with a game developed by Insomniac. Oh, and the Game Full message is people trying to join games that they dont have sufficient rank for. Oh, and Warhawk hasnt crashed for me yet. The problem is this is a multiplayer only game and they havent tested it to anywhere near the number of players that are playing now, but i think the bug is in the game itself and nothing to do with the servers, a couple of people have said it has crashed hosting a LAN game which doesnt even go anywhere near the Incog servers (which are built with multiple PS3's networked/rack mounted)

Resistance doesnt have any problems regarding online as far as i can see, never had a single crash and always been able to join games.

DJ, I know you say you dont mean to bash Sony, but you are, Reststance has practically no problems (and I certainly havent had any), and this game is developed by Incog, the bug/freezes are their problem so dont blame Sony.

I know it sounds like I am and I'm sorry for that. That wasn't my intention. As far as Resistance goes, I was only going by one of the posts I read on the playstation forums. I would link to it, but it was a few days ago and if you've ever spent any time on the playstation forums you know that those things change by the minute.

oh yeh, sure, just saying there are thousands upon thousands of people playing Warhawk now and there are what, 20-30 posts about it freezing? not everyone has the problem.... link

So what do you think midnight? Should I buy it or should I wait for a patch? I really want to play it, but I'm afraid that I'll be one of those people who are having problems.

The headline is misleading too btw. Just because it's free, it isn't what you pay for. But for free, SOny or the devs are doing an awesome job in giving the PSN an integrity that can't be matched by the other 'paid' servers. I'd say you should get it, not for the problems, but as a decision to want to have fun online along with other people.

I know you asked this question of midnight, but I clicked on this thread because I saw the header....

That's perfectly fine. The more input the better.

I say buy it, even if you do get the odd lock up (you may not) it will be patched anyways (and i would think real soon) so its not like you will be losing money on it

my first impressions of the game: graphically and sonically great, controls take some getting used to (not sure if the motion controls or the sticks are better yet, currently playing with sticks as it does seem slightly easier to me but the motion controls have the advantage of flying in one direction while aiming and firing in a different direction... motion controls for the craft, right analog for aiming), i'm sure i'll get the hang of it and tweaking the controls from the very start by practicing in your own LAN game with no other players certainly helps you get the setup you like and lets you try out all the vehicles/weapons before going online to err get your ass kicked by people who have been the beta testers

funny, warhawk, and resistance have never crashed with me before :-/

Here is what i say ...
Resistance has never crashed for me either and i have played tons and tons of hours online (1st game i bought.. got PS3 a week b4 christmas).
Actually one time it did kick me out of the game, and put my PS3 back to XMB.. went back in and there was a patch that added something and fixed glitches

Motorstorm has never given me any problems.. actually no online games have given me problems.

sooo... these issues aren't happening all of the time.. and if they did, it would be the game that is messed up not PSN... and then the developers of the game would put a Free patch that would fix whatevers wrong, and add new stuff

The thing that i would hesitate to do is buy a 360.. sure it has good games and stuff (i mean halo 3 is comming out and it has gears of war).. but check out the failure rate compared to sony's... microsofts is like 30% or more and sony's is less than 1%... so what would you rather do... pay all this money for a 360 and have it break down with a "red ring of death" or when it first came out, have it scratch disks and or have dead hard drives.... OR get a consol that doesn't break down for everybody?. with free online ...

the red ring of death is very real people... 6 of my friends that have 360's.. 5 of them have had the red ring of death.. 2 of them more than 1 time...

Here is the difference between xbox live and PSN.

Xbox live: p2p networked gaming, and you pay for special privileges such as friends list, marketplace and so on.
PSN: p2p networked gaming.

Sorry, but when it comes down to base networking, When you start a game of Rainbow Six Vegas on XBOX LIVE or PSN, you're connecting to another gamer, not xbox live or psn. That is the simplest way I can put it.

I own a 360, play it constantly, however the one thing I resent Microsoft for, is taking something that is free, charging a monthly fee for it, and act as the inbetween as far as being the gatekeeper for gaming is concerned.

Player ------internet---------------$$-Microsoft-$$-----------internet--------------player Host.
Player-------------------------------------internet-----------------------------------player Host. *PSN*

See something wrong with this? So from now on, I know you didn't mean anything by it DJ, but anything that happens with games on any specific platform, resistance, rainbow, etc...... is not really up to the service, because both sony and microsoft have nothing to do with connecting to someone else. Do I need to pay YOU to come over to your house and play games with you? That is what is going on. I'm paying someone that has nothing to do with playing on your xbox or ps3, for no game hosting, no game connectivity, no game optimization. Should the developers host dedicated servers, probably. It depends, we bought the game, but we're not paying the developers for hosting. We are however, paying microsoft for online gaming. I'd be willing to bet, that the majority of xbox live subscribers believe microsoft is hosting the games. I've even been told by people that I was ignorant for saying the game we are playing in is NOT being hosted by xbox live.

Now warhawk? Didn't I read that it was being hosted on a bunch of ps3s rackmounted? 60-70 something? here is something interesting to know... . Microsoft doesn't host a single game on any servers or participant servers. Not one. They host information, information that would otherwise be free.

So, in all reality you, I, we, are not paying microsoft for online gaming. They "allow" us to play online together on our own systems. Now that's stability.

btw, I have problems all the time connecting to games on xbox live, rainbow, gears, graw, graw2, quake 4, perfect dark, I can keep going on.. They all have networking problems, there are other users that cannot hear me and I cannot hear them, they cannot connect to my games nor I theirs. Xbox live services slow down the packet transfer in online games that are p2p based, by AT LEAST 40-50 milliseconds where otherwise it'd be 10-20ms ping for someone connecting to someone in the same city or state.

Rather pay for xbox live for better service? what service.. We were paying for xbox live last xbox system to play online. Now we pay slightly more for added marketplace features. Last xbox era they weren't hosting servers for games either... not even the same friend connectivity features as they do now. Why were we paying to "play online"?

[/rant]

Sorry, i get really sore when people (not just you or anyone specific) try to pass xbox live as this tremendous service that is better because we pay for it. We pay for it yes, and it goes right in microsofts pockets... not server support, not game support, not expanding game servers for games, etc etc etc..

BTW Dj, I mean absolutely no offense to you by my previous post. This topic just gets me really wound up thats all.

what's the difference between xbox's friends list and PS3's friends list, or marketplace and Playstation store?.. seriously, i don't know. but is whatever your getting thats different really worth the extra money..

Well, sure Ms and Sony took 2 different routes... but which one in the end satisfies more people? It's a big debatable question, so let's not even start it ok ?
