Sony has taken the wraps off a new television tuner and personal video recorder for PS3 in its Games Convention 2007 press conference.

Dubbed PlayTV, it will let you watch and record your favourite shows on your console completely independently of each other - so you can view something while saving something else. If you like.

There they are, one big happy, telly-watching family.
You'll be able to choose programmes to keep on your hard drive by selecting them from a fancy seven-day guide, and even control it all remotely using your PSP - in case you forgot to tell it to record something before you left for work. Or you could just stream it to your PSP and watch it elsewhere.

It will use the Digital Video Broadcasting standard, and be able to intelligently display the picture in high or standard definition depending on the capabilities of your TV.

"The introduction of PlayTV really will extend the already broad entertainment credentials of PS3, and makes it an exceptionally attractive proposition for the whole family," said David Reeves, big cheese of Sony Europe.

It's so easy your ageing parents could probably use it - or so we're told, and will be available in early 2008 across the UK, France, Italy, Germany and Spain.

A price is yet to be mentioned.

Corporate firewall is blocking the ability to upload the image... Will do it once I'm off site.

Are there any advantages to having PlayTV over my DVR and a SlingBox?

Uh.. well.. it allows you to BUY A PS3 instead? It also..uh.. plays GAMES? Like..uh MGS4! <I think that's the only game it plays though>

It just integrates a DVR into the PS3... SLingbox and a true dual channel DVR may be a better option.

We'll really have to see what it's all about. To me.. It's just a bonus as I have a media center PC with TVersity and a DVR (which is stand alone because it's provided from my ISP).

what i like about it is the integration with the PSP, you can control PlayTV remotely with the PSP and you can also watch remotely what you have recorded.
Only downer for me is it isnt really required, my cable box has a 160gb HDD recorder in it already that allows me to record 2 channels while watching a 3rd (and yes, its HD). So is it worth it just for PSP integration? maybe

Yeah... My cable box is the same... but my provider has it locked down so I cant get the data out. If I actually owned it, by passing my provider's supplied one, I think I could access the video in it's file format... But alas... No.

I figure that is cool for the family and what not.... But my PS3 is for me. So all the cool history channel and sci-fi and discovery programming my girl wont watch... Now I can have it on at work, when I travel, or whatever.

I also have a PC with Tversity and I use DYNDNS to give me a nifty URL to go it. But hey... what's one more right?

... so is it saying that it won't be released in USA?

I do know firmware is unified globally... So if their PS3 can do it.. ours will also.

Now who knows if the box will be NTSC compatable... that's the real question.
