Exclusivity....

As this day of E3 rolls over, I ponder a simple question. Does the 360 really have "exclusives"? I ask this apparently stupid question because if you look at most 360 titles they come out for both the 360 and PC. How can you call something exclusive when it is on the PC also. Even Gears of War is comming to the PC and the disk will have all the current media you can buy over Live.
To mean and exclusive would be something that is on and just on that platform. The moment you put it on something else, you loose the power of the idea of exclusive. So tell me what you think cause I am tired and just want to see a good discussion that does not involve flaming battles between PS3 and 360 people. I have neither, so I don't care.

It depends how you look at it. In this case, Games for Windows and XBOX360 are the same company. Therefore Gears of War / Viva Pinata are still exclusivly held by Microsoft for its gaming platforms.
Its the same as a game being on PS2 and PSP .. its still a Sony exclusive.
More and more the line is being blurred between Windows Live and Xbox360, with the integration of the services and cross-platform multiplayer. I personally see Games for windows and XBOXLIVE as one entity really as you can cross communicate, cross game and both use the same LIVE servers for their achievment stats etc.
The only way I see exclusivity being lost on Gears (for example) is if it appears on a rival platform such as the Wii, PS3, PSP, DS

Well as stated, exclusive to me really means that it is on a single platform. The definition of the word does support this kind of thinking. So really, wouldn't MS be loosing out on say 360 sales by fostering this it's on this and that attitude. When instead they could just go one or the other. This kind of thinking makes me really wonder why they got into consoles in the first place. Was it just so they could say things are "next Gen" and crank up the price by $10-$20? Or may be cause they saw an opportunity to make micro payments more mainstream so they can eventually try to get it over to the PC side?
The imputes behind it seams suspect given that they really could have left consoles alone and pushed harder to make the PC more outstanding. But this is just a line of thought.

some people only buy consoles ... others only buy PCs. Microsoft is in a position of making a profit off of either of these two groups as they got their console gaming division as well as their PC gaming division.
its that simple ... if they find that they can introduce more options for potential buyers that is what they'll do. if someone really wants that game they can buy it on the console or wait for it to hit the PC. either way Bill Gates is getting your hard earned cash. if you are a console user ... then he's making a great deal of money because that's all MS hardware ... and as for the PC you might not be buying a PC but chances are you are playing MS games on a Windows OS and then again more money for Bill.
its a good situation for him but back to the whole 'exclusive' title for games. i agree it should be for one single platform. when you are hooking up with a girl and you are going to be exclusive with her it means just that ... being with her and no one else.
i donno ... the way Chimpy draws similarities between online games using the same servers is interesting but if a 360 game and a PS3 game used the same servers it wouldn't make it exclusive. they'd just be using the same server so i feel that point is moot.

it is one sevice now though.
XBOXLIVE and Games for Windows are the SAME service, utililising the same Gamertags, Servers, Protocols etc to do cross platform gaming, chat, messaging etc. The PS3 could not communicate with the service at all as it has a different OS and protocols.
MS are changing the rules... its up to you to free your mind.

But the PS3 has new firmware all the time... That could easily be added (it wont be, but if they wanted it could be done).
Has the 360 division really started turning profits? (I am under the imperssion that they arent, but I dont know what I read to make me think that, so I just want to know either way.)
They way I have always seen it is the 360 is just part of microsoft, so when they say exclusive, I'm not really surprised to see it on the PC.

Games for Windows and LIVE will never be cross platform with PS3 as MS wont allow it, and im pretty sure that Sony wouldnt be too happy about it either. They might as well join forces and make one console.

I think that is kind of straying from the discussion. A server is just a server, as long as one company agrees to let others use them, then they are a moot point. All that argument shows is a companies will to have cross platform compatibility. The difference in OS's means little when it is just how the server receives information and what protocols are being used to convey them. In that respect, PSN and Live have little difference.
I think my real wonderment to this odd cross platform exclusivity has to do with the price. I mean lets look at Overlord, a 360 and PC title. For the 360, the game cost $60. But for the PC the game cost $40. Is the price justified for the 360 version when in all truth they are exactly the same game. Should the MS exclusive of PC and 360 really grant them the ability to gouge their consol users while giving the PC users a discount for having more variable hardware.

New slogan FTW.
By the way, exclusive to me means "only way you can play it without buying a $2500 (mediocre) gaming rig and invest more in it over the years."
I sure as hell don't have a computer that could run these games. I'm rocking 1.7 GHz here.
If it's made for the PC only it may as well be on the moon, because I can't play it.
That's console exclusivity.

Well mediocre gaming rig is, in my mind, at $800-$1200. My plans for a above average PC stand at $1600-$2400. Any more then that is nit picking over those extra couple of .2Ghz on a processor. I am but also am not looking forward to the new AMD offerings and what a Quad Core will cost. But hey my Athlon X2 is still chugging well enough, I just need a new GPU and a MUCH larger HD.
